Crafted in France circa 1880 and titled Volontaire de 92, the sculpture captures a young Revolutionary soldier in a moment of urgency and resolve, advancing forward with musket in hand and arm raised in a call to arms. The composition is full of movement and tension, emblematic of the patriotic fervor surrounding the events of 1792 and the storming of the Tuileries Palace.
The figure is finely cast with exceptional detail, from the expressive facial features and windswept attire to the naturalistic treatment of the rocky base. The surface retains a rich, warm brown patinated bronze finish, highlighting the depth and texture of the modeling. The sculpture is mounted on a later double-tiered variegated beige marble base, fitted with a descriptive cartouche, which complements the strength of the composition while providing stability and presence.
This antique sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and presents beautifully with strong visual impact from all angles.
Paul-François Choppin (1856–1937) was a French sculptor born in Auteuil. Deaf and mute from early childhood, he trained at the National Institution for Deaf-Mutes in Paris, followed by studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts under François Jouffroy and Alexandre Falguière. Choppin exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1877, becoming a member in 1886. His Volontaire model was shown multiple times, including at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, where he earned a bronze medal. He is listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists and remains recognized for his expressive and historically inspired works.
