The male figure is depicted in traditional court dress with a long queue braid and sword, while his female companion wears elaborately modeled robes with a pale yellow jacket. Both are decorated predominantly in cobalt blue and white, with finely painted details throughout.
Particularly appealing is the relationship between the two figures. Their opposing poses, closely related decoration and nearly identical height make clear that they were conceived as companion pieces. Offered together, they create a much stronger and more unusual decorative presence than either figure individually.
The male measures approximately 13" H × 9" W × 9" D; the female approximately 12.5" H × 6" W × 8" D.
Both remain in excellent vintage condition with the minor irregularities expected of hand-painted porcelain of this age.
An impressive pair for a console, mantel, dining room or collected chinoiserie interior.
