Hand-forged in the late 19th to early 20th century, this copper and iron hearth shovel reflects the utilitarian metalwork once essential in early American homes and workshops. The copper pan is hand-raised and shaped with a slightly tapered profile, showing the planishing marks and subtle irregularities characteristic of pre-industrial craftsmanship.
An iron strap handle, originally finished with a copper wash, is riveted to the blade using traditional copper fasteners, and terminates in a forged hanging ring shaped by heat and hammer.
Designed for managing ash and embers in wood and coal stoves, the piece retains its authentic surface history and work-forged presence. A robust example of functional 1880–1920 metalwork with strong sculptural appeal.
