About this Item: Watercolor on Paper, under glass, 32" l x 24"h overall, sight 29"l x 21"h, circa 1930s.
Artist: Russell Cowles, American Painter (1887-1979):
In 1937, Russell Cowles was featured in the 2nd Annual San Francisco Art Association Watercolor Exhibition at what is now the SFMOMA (previously known as San Francisco Museum of Art); from July 1 through July 31 (museum label on verso dated 06/28/1937). Records detail the exhibition of his work as Series 1 in exhibition dates. Other label on the verso reflects his representation by the reputed Dalzell Hatfield Galleries of New York/Los Angeles. Provenance: Family descent up til most recent acquisition by private collection.
Condition: Fine.
Included artist signed book titled: Russell Cowles by Donald Bear, Forty-eight reproductions of paintings and twenty letters by the artist. Copyright 1945. Limited edition # 546 of 1000. Book designed by Merle Armitage, printed for Dalzell Hatfield.
Biography: Russell Cowles was born in Algona, Iowa in 1887. His father was a well-known newspaperman, who became publisher of the Des Moines Register and Tribune. His mother studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and encouraged his interest. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1909 and studied in Paris as well as New York at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students' League with Douglas Volk and Barry Faulkner. He assisted both artists in mural painting.
