It depicts the Bastille fortress with … Read more An 18th-Century faience Nevers, highly sought after French Revolutionary War *stapled tin glazed plate. It depicts the Bastille fortress with a vigilant patrolling peasant. It was made to remind French citizens to be watchful and observant during the time of the French Revolution. It is a highly collectible plate, hand molded and hand painted with vibrant colors. It has a festooned floral and geometric surround and scalloped edge. The plate has the painted mark L on the reverse. It is also called faïence parlante or faïence patriotique.

* Antique ceramics with staple (rivet) repairs are very collectible. Unlike today where we discard anything chipped or cracked, broken household items were repaired at home or taken to a metal smith to be restored. For every metal staple, repairers of had old to hand drill two tiny holes through the ceramic, then carefully hammer the staple home. See less
