Paulsen’s pieces are reminiscent of mural fragments from 19th Century New England houses. His works are, in fact, inspired by the naïve imprints of 19th Century itinerant American painters, such as Rufus Porter and John Avery, whose frescoes he came to know while working as a restorer in Nantucket. Currently residing in Hudson NY, the artist draws on a range of influences from the frescoes of Giotto and Synthetic Cubism to graffiti and stencil art. "Kevin Paulsen paints carefully composed but deceptively naïve works that recall the innocence and simplicity of Early American folk murals. Using pale, muted tones and carefully designed compositions, Paulsen’s work blends elements of history and myth, depicting an idealized world of fantastic buildings and Edenic forests while subtly addressing the uneasy relationship between industrialization and the natural world."
