A superb portrait set in a beautifully accomplished Western landscape, this work displays Phelps' deeply humanistic bent.
Measures 25" x 30" in a 32 1/2" x 37 1/2" frame.
Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter, etcher. Born in NYC on April 16, 1874, Edith Catlin studied with Charles Hawthorne, William Merritt Chase, and at Académie Julian in Paris.
The wife of Stowe Phelps, she lived in Connecticut and NYC before settling in Santa Barbara, California in the 1930s where she remained until her death on July 8, 1961.
