A scarce antique Dutch "klapbuffet" (folding buffet) from the late 18th century.
Netherlands, circa 1780, beautifully handcrafted in period Neoclassical influenced Louis XVI (1774-1791) taste, solid mahogany inlaid with contrasting banding, innovative transformative design.
The so called "klapbuffet" or "klapbuffetten" were a type of Dutch metamorphic multifunctional furniture that resembled a commode when closed, but opens to reveal a work surface, tiered shelving, tray slides for holding vessel and basin, which made it somewhat of a buffet etagère sideboard, highly suitable for serving meals or to rinse wine-glasses.
Having a concealed hinged lift-top that opens to form a tall shelved backsplash, above a rectangular case fitted with a slide-out tray extension at both sides, small drawer to the sides, a large central drawer affixed with original polished brass bale handles and escutcheon, over an early tambour cabinet door, flanked by classical reeded stiles, raised on tapering square legs.
