French Art Deco sculpture certainly fancied the female form, as this small statue by Garcia demonstrates. In 1920s France a raft of artists who created these fanciful statues – Bouraine, Derenne, Fayral, and Max Le Verrier, to name a few. Often their sculptures were made of patinated spelter (white metal, as is this one) to appeal to a less-affluent crowd of buyers than those who could afford bronze.
These sculptures represent the high-stepping, liberated spirit of the Art Deco movement at its finest hour.
Measurements: about 9 ½ inches tall, 7 ½ front-to-back. The width of the (square) black Belgian marble plinth is 2 ¾ inches.
Condition: Slightly compromised patina (green paint). Some disturbance around the toes of the left foot (no impact on the sturdiness of the figure). The first five photos were take with natural light; the last two with flash.
