Regency Japonesque: Coalport Porcelain "Dollar Pattern" Dish
(Kakiemon Style
Circa 1810
A superb and large oval porcelain dish produced by the Coalport factory during the Regency period (c. 1810), decorated in the distinctive and vibrant "Dollar Pattern" (also known as the "Japan" or "Kakiemon" style).
This pattern is a brilliant English reinterpretation of 17th-century Japanese Kakiemon porcelain. The complex design is organized around a central oval medallion featuring a stylized flowering stem in emerald green, iron-red, and purple enamels, framed by an orange border with a gilt zig-zag motif.
The wide rim is divided into alternating reserves:
The "Dollar" Panels: Four vase-shaped white reserves containing a distinctive abstract green motif that resembles a dollar sign or scroll, from which the pattern takes its collectors' name.
The Orange Grounds: Four opposing panels featuring a rich iron-red ground overlaid with delicate gilt flowering branches.
The reverse features an unglazed central pad (typical of early 19th-century Coalport serving wares) and an underglaze blue double circle mark.
Condition:Excellent antique condition. Enamels are bright with minimal rubbing to the gilt. No chips, cracks, or restoration.
Measurements:
Width: 14 1/4 inches (36.8 cm)
Depth: 11 inches (27.9 cm)
Height: 1 1/4 inches (3.2 cm)
Historical Context:
In the early 19th century, the Prince Regent's taste for the exotic drove a revival of "Imari" and "Kakiemon" styles in English porcelain. The "Dollar Pattern" is one of Coalport's most successful and recognizable contributions to this genre, blending the asymmetry of Japanese design with the geometric precision of the Regency era.
