A delightful pair of early 19th century figurines, these diminutive hand-molded game dogs have a charming simplicity. Hand painted, they have endearing faces and soft red markings. Delicately formed with separately molded front legs, they sit on bases with a narrow line of softly glowing gold trim. The undersides bear impressed marks – a “J” on one and a “W” on the other, likely the initials of the craftsmen.
These early figurines predate the then soon-to-be Victorian era - which would usher in burgeoning pottery production using molds to create Staffordshire dogs – and are a fascinating glimpse into the early stages of this English folk art.
