This dimensional early signed mid century modern 1940's rare Bernice Goodspeed fabulous Pin or pendant is hallmarked on the back "sterling taxco B Mexico."It has blackened sterling mixed with sterling silver with abstractions of design inspired by her archaelogical finds and her studies of the indians of Central Mexico. This is very collectable. It serves as a dual purpose; as a pin or pendant both having the bar and loop for a chain. There is no chain that goes with this. Bernice Goodspeed was an American born cultural anthropologist and settled in Mexico City in 193 to complete her studies. While working as a tour guide to ancient sites she met the Hungarian artist named Carl Pappe with whom she married in 1935. They then moved to Taxco and opened up a studio and gallery. Bernice's designs incorporate columbian motifs and have great influence of Aztec and Mayan stonework as exemplified in this rare pin/ brooch/ necklace pendant. This is a very early design of hers done in the early 40's. One just needs a great sterling silver chain to use as a pendant. This is a rare piece.
