"The Monster's Reflection" Original by Sam Gulliver
In The Monster’s Reflection, Sam references Caravaggio’s iconic painting of Narcissus who sees his reflection in a pool of water. However, unlike Narcissus who is beautiful, the Creature becomes more deformed each time he sees himself. This mirrors the Creature’s arc throughout the novel in which his capacity for cruelty increases. It also serves as a commentary on the very AI technology used to create the piece. AI learns through taking in existing media, yet in this composition, instead of becoming more intelligent, it only becomes more insidious.
