Hand-built and with drastic … Read more A large ceramic lidded vessel with striking sculptural form by contemporary Japanese potter Shigemasa Higashida (1955-). Hand-built and with drastic carving and shaving, the upright lidded vessel almost takes a brutalist form with its unexpected irregular facades with sharp edges. The surface is covered with a brilliant green and yellow Oribe glaze that splashes and drips to form a spontaneous pattern. The texture is a study of contrast, changing from smooth to rough across the surface as if it is a natural boulder covered in moss, or a craggy landscape with lush pools and formidable cliffs. A large exemplary piece from the renowned Japanese potter.
Marked on the base and comes with a signed tomobako as shown.
Born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1955, Shigemasa Higashida obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate training in ceramics between 1975 and 1986 at Shimonoseki and Tokyo Universities respectively. He has worked predominately in Shino and Oribe styles during his career and is regarded as a master of those respective disciplines. He has been extensively exhibited and won numerous awards in Japan and the USA and is featured in many museum collections. See less
