Antique large 19th Century Large Chinese Cloisonne Vase.
Breathtakingly beautiful Cloisonne Enamel Vase over Ormolu Bronze Circa 1850. Qing Dynasty. The Palace-sized ovoid body-shaped vase features birds perched on the branches of plum trees, accompanied by green foliage with a butterfly, as well as a variety of flowers; Chrysanthemum, Cherry Blossom, tiger lily, and others in strikingly colorful tones, shown in full bloom on turquoise ground. The vase's waisted neck and base are intricately decorated with geometric scrolling lotus motifs and stylized foliate patterns on black ground which are demarcated and delineated by double bands of gilding. In addition, the vase has gilded rims on the top and around the turquoise bottom.
This rare vase is an exceptional example of Chinese cloisonné enamel decorative art. The popular and highly effective technique consists of applying vitreous enamel to cells of space (cloisons), that have been marked by small sections of metal wires soldered onto an object’s surface. Here, this technique has been superbly utilized to adorn the vase with detailed, and delightful scenes of flowers and exotic birdlife in vibrant colors...just gorgeous!.
The beautiful imperial garden scene with yellow, brown, and rust-tone birds with a butterfly has been nicely set against turquoise ground. The vase's upper and lower portion of geometric patterns in lovely green, turquoise, and rust tones have been nicely set to a black ground - an unusual and rare choice yet bears its fruits immediately: both the gilding and the many rich tones, particularly the dark ground, make this vase mesmerizing to look at, a rare and exceptional work of Chinese enamel art.
Dimensions: Vase stands 20 1/2" tall, 11" at the widest point with a top diameter of 7" and a bottom diameter of 8 ".
Good condition. The vase stands stable, the enameled body has no dents, no chips, and no cracks. However, there is a wear line below the upper rim where the finish has been slightly polished off not noticeable unless pointed out. There is some tiny pitting to the cloisonne enamel- what is common for very old cloisonne enamel pieces, as proof of their age.
