An early Broadface Kachina crafted by the renowned Hopi carver Kevin Pochoema. The Kachina doll carries a bow in one hand and yucca whips in the other, attired in traditional white kilt and sash with a fox tail at the back. A Kiva in the sky symbol graces the side of the base. Every intricate detail of this piece is skillfully hand carved from cottonwood, and hand painted to finish. The bottom is marked with "Kevin Pochoema, Bacavi, 4-9-86".
According to Barton Wright’s book "Kachinas: A Hopi Artist’s Documentary", Wuyak-kuita has assumed various forms over time. These Kachinas serve as guards during ceremonies, preventing any transgressions on the Kachina's path. Traditionally, they were used to enforce community tasks like cleaning springs. Wuyak-kuita, belonging to this category, is often seen at the rear of the Bean Dance Procession or circling wide at the sides. He approaches clowns during ceremonies, filling them with awe. On Third Mesa, Wuyak-kuita Kachinas guard the kivas to keep He’-e’-e from approaching too close during the Palolokong Ceremony or from going to the Flute Spring during the same ceremony.

About the carver: Kevin Pochoema, an award-winning Katsina carver, is a proud member of the Greasewood Clan residing in the Hopi village of Bacavi on Third Mesa in Arizona. His exceptional talents have earned him recognition as one of the foremost Kachina - Katsina carvers. In 1992, his 20-inch Water Maiden earned him a prestigious "Best Concept Carving" award, a testament to his artistic ingenuity and dedication. Pochoema possesses a remarkable skill for capturing the essence of movement and fluidity, whether it be in the intricate regalia or the flowing hair of his carvings. His impressive list of awards includes 1989-92 O’odham Tash, Casa Grandes AZ; 1991 Best of Class, 1992 Best Concept Carving, 1st, 3rd, Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, Gallup, NM; 1996 1st Over 15 inch Katsina Dolls, Hopi Marketplace, Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff, AZ. These awards are just a glimpse of Kevin Pochoema's celebrated career. Over the years, he has continued to garner recognition and acclaim for his outstanding contributions to the world of Katsina carving.
Please kindly understand that determining the precise identity of a Kachina doll can be quite challenging, especially when it lacks markings from the artist. Each carver brings their unique style, and the era of production can as well influence these styles and trends. I'm committed to describing the item to the best of my abilities. All attached photos are integral to the listing, so please review these photos closely for any details I might have missed.
