Ib Bluitgen trained as a silversmith at the Georg Jensen Silversmithy and furthered his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Sculpture from 1945 to 1948. He returned to Georg Jensen Silversmithy design department from 1948 to 1962, becoming head of that department in 1950. Bluitgen opened his own studio in 1961 and was one of the founders of the Danish Crafts Council and an active member in the group, Danish Silversmiths, and his work was exhibited throughout Europe and North America. Bluitgen received awards at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and the Statens Kunstfond prize in 1976, as well as the Karl Gustav Hansen prize in 2007.
