This beautiful antique bronze figure, was created in France, circa 1880. The realistic sculpture, titled on the front: "Escholier, 14eme Siecle", (meaning middle French, 14th century), features a standing medieval man carrying a lantern, with a book under one arm and a sword at his waist. The detailed sculpture sits on a circular variegated marble base and signed E. Picault, with front labeled plaque. The Medieval bronze sculpture is in excellent condition with wonderful details and adorns a rich patinated bronze finish. Place this manly piece on a bookshelf, or on a study's desk.
Emile Louis Picault (1833-1915) was a French sculptor, best known for works depicting allegorical and patriotic subjects, and mythological heroes. Picault was a very prolific artist, producing many sculptures during his long sculpting career. He began to show his artwork at the Salon beginning in 1863. He signed the majority of his work as "E. Picault". Listed in the Benezt (see last picture).
