Weill invented and trademarked the term "vitreography", a technique of painting on different glass panes and layering them inside a shadow box frame to create a three dimensional piece of artwork. This particular painting is one of Weill's most charming and sought-after pieces and these photos don't really do this painting justice or show the three dimensional quality that one can truly appreciate seeing it in person! There are three layers of art in this piece with the 2 outermost being glass and the innermost layer is probably paper or wood. The city shown in this painting seems to be a composite of Paris and New York and recalls so much of the style of mid century era illustrators like Raymond Peynet. The couple standing and gazing at the river and bridge could be Peynet's "Lovers" enjoying a beautiful spring Paris afternoon. Frame has both an easel back stand for desktop display and a small hook to hang on the wall. Utterly unique piece of art full of retro charm! See less
