Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
This charming type of sewing basket was all the rage in the mid 20th-century. This beauty, with its artfully done stumpwork needlepoint top, was made in Japan for the Singer Corporation. The sturdy, substantially-sized wooden frame’s exterior is rattan rope handwoven in a basket weave pattern with cane splints interspersed in a vertical pattern. There are two, triple strand rows of navy blue rope woven into the pattern for contrast. This same navy blue accent can be found woven into the center part of the swivel handle. The overall neutral color scheme is beigey oatmeal with tan and navy accents, a classically appealing combination. The basket’s underside is bamboo wood with the makers model # and country of origin stamp; four peg feet elevate and protect the bottom. The interior compartment is fully lined in royal blue satin, as is the pearl-accented tufted cushioned (for pins and needles) underside of the lid. Two hinges on the back allow the lid to be fully opened with slender ropes on both sides allowing it to remain open. An intact Singer label is located at the top on the underside of the lid. There is a removable plastic tray with four compartments, three small squares and one rectangular which holds sewing or crafting supplies. On the exterior front, a beige looped fastener latches the lid in place. It measures 12¾” x 10” x 8” W/D/H (height without handle); handle up measures 5”; interior compartment 6½” x 10½” x 8¼“ H/W/D; weight 2 lbs. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear which is limited to the trim on the inside lip, which has faded slightly. The tray has ambered over time and a small piece of the left upper side is missing (does not affect its integrity and stays in place); free of stains. While designed to store sewing accoutrements, it’s perfectly suited for storing craft or embroidery items. A fabulous basket for a collector of vintage sewing baskets or the perfect gift for someone who is.
