The Mid Century Modern art book is published by R. Piper - Bucherei & Co. Verlag Munchen, printed in Germany in 1966. The German language book features 26 fine art lithograph print images and lithograph print covers of the artist Marc Chagall. This truly is an exquisite, beautiful, high quality fine art presentation of these Chagall master artworks.

Marc Chagall ( 1887 - 1985 ) the French Russian born jewish Expressionist artists is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. His early Modernist artworks explore concepts and themes of spirituality, angelic influences, and the Jewish cultural life human experience. Chagall is commonly regarded as the quintessential preeminent Jewish artist of The 20th Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color, and creations in nearly every medium and form of art won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Chagall are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.

In 1948 Chagall produced a series of 13 lithographs based on stories from Arabian Nights. The lithographs won the Graphic Prize at The Venice Biennial in 1948. To date, they are considered to be some of the best examples of lithographic work done before 1950, also representing Chagall's first foray into color lithography. The predominate theme in the illustrations is that of separation or loss of love, reunion and the meaning of death. Chagall suffered the loss of his own wife prior to producing these artworks.

" Arabische Nachte " this German publication book was the first to reproduce the Chagall lithographs. It features 26 lithograph print pages, 13 in color and 13 black & white drawings. The small scale artist's book reproduces all of the 13 lithographs and the associated black & white drawings. It concluded with an essay in German language, and is hardcover bound with color lithograph print matte finish cover boards.

This Chagall edition of Arabian Nights is a beautiful example of a true artist's book. The Arabian Nights has been the source of artistic inspiration in the west for centuries. Illustrations have been included in Nights books since they were first published. Typically, illustrations are used to enhance text. In an artist's book, the text is merely a counterpart to present the artworks. The Piper Bucherei book recognizes this and edits out most of the text, leaving the art as the focus. What is important is the lithographs, the text is only meant to contextualize the importance of the images.

The rare out of print Mid Century Modernist art book measures 5" W X 7 1/2" H X 1/4" D, with 50 pages.
