A tremendous work of art this absolutely remarkable treasure is made entirely of delicately detailed hand embroidery. In classical colors, this shawl has a four-season quadrant design.
The timeless “paisley” motif originates in 11thc. Indian, it traveled the silk routes east to west and via the East India Company became known in Europe as “Paisley" named after the important textile town in the lowlands of Scotland where the pattern was generally jacquard woven around the 1830s. This piece was probably embroidered around that time.
This piece would be fantastic in a monumental frame.
