Sir Jacob Epstein ( 1880 - 1959 ) was an American-British sculptor of a Jewish background who helped pioneer Modern sculpture. Born in The United States, he moved to Europe in 1902, becoming a British subject in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged the ideas on what was appropriate subject matter for public artworks.
He revolted against ornate, pretty art, he made bold, often harsh and massive forms of bronze or stone. His sculpture is distinguished by its rigorous rough-hewn Realism. Avant-Garde in concept and style, his works often shocked his audience. Because of the often sexual content, and also they deliberately abandoned the conventions of Classical Greek sculpture by European academic sculptors.
In this magnificent and important volume Epstein's development and his life's work in sculpture are traced in text and photographs from his early days in New York fascinated by the faces of his fellow Jews, through his student years in Paris, to his arrival in London. He is regarded as the greatest recorder of human character since Rembrandt, and later recognized of his genius as a monumental artist. Og Epstein's 514 known works 446 are reproduced in the beautiful volume.
