1 Fine Antique Work of Art Impressionist Oil Painting Scottish Moor Highlands Evening Glen Sannox By George Houston.
Subject beautiful traditional Scottish Highland mountain landscape views of Glen Sannox on the Isle Of Arran Scotland,
Signed in the bottom corner by the known Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy artist George Houston RSW.
Title "Evening, Glen Sannox" by GEORGE HOUSTON RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1869 - 1947).
A good size with the frame being 81 cm wide and 59.75 cm high.
Set in a traditional gilt frame.
Circa early 20th century.
Having such impressive dramatic perspective, in the foreground your focus is first drawn to the various open grass mooorland with heather vegetation, magnificent views of the mountains rising in the background. Set at evening sunset time with golden colour sky above with further grey clouds higher up overhead.
The use of colour is exceptional with this artwork.
This is such a tranquil scene.
Sannox sits on the east coast of the Isle of Arran, with a stunning backdrop of scenery in the shape of Glen Sannox. To the north lies North Glen Sannox. The A841 road passes through to Lochranza, on a stretch of road known locally as the Boguille. Sannox (Scottish Gaelic: Sannaig) is a village on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. The village is within the parish of Kilbride. The name comes from the name the Vikings gave to the area, Sandvik, meaning the Sandy Bay.
Oil on board.
Biography of the artist George Houston RSA, RI, RSW (20 January 1869 – 5 October 1947) was a Scottish artist. He was a prolific landscape painter, using both oil and watercolour. He mainly depicted scenes of Argyll and Ayrshire. His works have sold numerous times at auction with the highest sold price recorded at $28,008 US Dollars.
His Birth and death Houston was born in Dalry, North Ayrshire. In the 1880s he stayed at North Bank Cottage in Portencross, where he formed a long-lasting friendship with the noted Scottish author Neil Munro (Para Handy). In 1912 Neil Munro wrote a book entitled "Ayrshire Idylls", and this was illustrated by George Houston. It is possible that Houston and his family moved to the nearby town of Saltcoats before moving back to Dalry. Thereafter he lived at West Lynn until his death on 5 October 1947.
His Notable works An Ayrshire Landscape was purchased by Glasgow Corporation in 1904 and remains in the Glasgow Museums collection. Houston was a friend of the writer Neil Munro and illustrated Munro's book Ayrshire Idylls (A&C Black, 1912). Munro also provided commentary on Burns' Country, a series of 12 etchings made by Houston published in 1915. These etchings are now in the possession of the North Ayrshire Council Museums Service.
His family Houston married Anne Kerr Crawford in 1889 and the couple had ten children together.
