The Awakening
Original Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting on European Linen
by Monique Nichols
"The Awakening" is a celebration of life unfolding.
Sweeping brushstrokes radiate outward from a luminous center, creating the sensation of light, movement, and quiet transformation. Rich layers of emerald greens, fresh spring yellows, soft blues, and delicate ivory tones flow together in rhythmic harmony, inviting the viewer to pause, breathe, and become immersed in the painting's uplifting energy.
Every person who stands before this work discovers something unique. Some see the opening petals of an exotic flower. Others imagine tropical foliage moving gently in the wind, a burst of sunlight through a forest canopy, or even the birth of a distant galaxy. There is no single interpretation—only an invitation to experience the painting through your own imagination.
This has always been one of my personal favorites. Its sense of movement, optimism, and quiet joy stayed with me long after I completed it, inspiring me to explore a similar composition in another painting that eventually found a new home with a collector. Even today, this original remains especially meaningful to me.
My creative process is entirely intuitive. I rarely begin with a predetermined image or sketch. Instead, I allow color, rhythm, and movement to guide each brushstroke until the painting gradually reveals itself. I often feel less like I am controlling the painting and more like I am discovering it as it unfolds.
Years ago, while I owned my own gallery, a woman entered and immediately connected with one of my abstract paintings. She explained that her spiritual teacher had described the exact colors and flowing forms she needed in her home. Unable to purchase it immediately, she returned every week, faithfully making small payments until the painting finally became hers. Once she took it home, I never saw her again, but I have never forgotten how powerfully art can speak to someone when the timing is right.
This original painting has been exhibited over the years and carefully transported between several exhibition venues while remaining in excellent original condition.
I personally stretched this fine European linen over the stretcher bars before beginning the painting, completing every stage of its creation by hand using professional oil paints.
One of the painting's most remarkable qualities is the way it responds to changing light. Throughout the day, the colors shift gently, revealing new depth, movement, and luminosity. Although every effort has been made to photograph the artwork accurately, the original possesses a brilliance and vibrancy that photographs cannot fully capture.
An accent light placed above or below the painting beautifully enhances the expressive brushwork and layered color transitions.
Whether displayed in a contemporary residence, executive office, wellness space, boutique hotel, or gallery, "The Awakening" fills the room with freshness, optimism, movement, and quiet strength.

From the Artist
Every original painting I create is one of a kind. I never paint from photographs or reproduce previous works. Each painting develops intuitively through color, movement, and emotion, becoming a unique expression that can never be duplicated.

The painting is done in oils and it is on Linen brought from Europe. Although I have taken photographs during the day, having the colors come true as they are, is impossible. In reality, they are much more vibrant. It is like they have their own life since the shapes and color combination create so much movement. The color combination is very peaceful and serene and has a calm yet energetic effect on the viewer. All my paintings change very much by the surrounding light and objects. It would look great with an accent light above or below the painting. The frame around the painting is hand made and it was made just to give more of a finished look as it was being exhibited at a show. A more appropriate frame would look great. Wonderful for any residential and commercial environment. less
