The posture is natural, and his serene face bears a slight smile. The eyes are made of glass for added realism. The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with glass beads; the enlightened one holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. In his right hand, he holds a myrobalan fruit, an allusion to buddha’s healing power. Provenance: estate of the merchant and collector claude de marteau. Sold with a certificate of provenance. H 99 cm x d 19 cm x w 42 cm. (base included) we have a very limited number of these pieces, all from the same period and provenance. See less
