Subject beautiful portrait of a British a thoroughbred white horse in a stable in side profile facing right, with straw around the stable floor. the horse look so exceptionally well groomed loved and kept and is so content.
Oil on board.
Set in a traditional original gilt frame.
Circa late 19th century Victorian era dated 1897.
Provenance label verso.
A nice size with the frame being 40.5 cm width and 33 cm high.
Godfrey Douglas Giles was born on the 9 November 1857 - he died on 1 February 1941. He was a well known artist particularly of horses & military battle images, he gained significant experiences when he served with the British Army in India also Afghanistan, Egypt and in South Africa. He also did many fascinating caricatures for magazine Vanity Fair.
Captain Edward Giles of the Royal Navy who was based in Karachi was Godfreys father. Godfrey went to a boarding school in the Shires which was located in England. He was then sent by his father to go to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, to start his military career. He was first sent to India in 1875. He was involved in the battle during the Second Afghan War, he was the 1st Sind Horse also the 19th Native Infantry, mainly on the Khleat and Kandahar fronts, according to one obituary notice he was present at Maiwand. He certainly was present during the battle of Khuski-Nakhud in February 1879 also he later painted the Charge of the Scinde Horse at Khuski-Nakhud. Another of is known paintings was a very interesting painting whch was of the E/B Battery Royal Horse Artillery at Maiwand, this was was exhibited in 1893. He did the intial sketch from details that where given to him by RSM Paton and Sergeant Mullane, VC who had been stationed with the battery.
He went with the Gordon Relief Expedition to Sudan and took charge of the Turkish cavalry at El Teb. Giles also provided a sketch of the battle which was the begninning for a large fold-out panorama of the battle published in The Graphic on 1 March 1884, and began painting a scene of the battle when he returned to Cairo shortly after the event. He was also present at the battle of Tamai, and later received a commission from Lieut. P.S. Marling of the 60th Rifles depicting the latter saving Private Morley of the 35th Regiment for which Marling received the Victoria Cross. Subsequently, Giles served as captain in the Loyal Suffolk Hussars and the Artists' Rifle Corps.
Having gained the rank of Major, Godfrey Douglas Giles left the army in 1884 and he then arrived in Paris in 1885 where he learnt is art trade skills under the watch of the known Carolus-Duran. He successfully exhibited paintings such as The Battle of Tamai and El Teb at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy after which he settled in Newmarket where he was able to depict horses and horse-racing scenes. His illustrations also appeared in the weekly Black & White Budget in 1891.
After the outbreak of the Boer War in South Africa in 1899, Giles was sent there as war correspondent and artist by The Graphic and the Daily Graphic, and joined with French's 1st Cavalry Brigade. He saw the surrender of General Piet Cronjé after the Battle of Paardeberg, and was present at the subsequent relief of Kimberley. Later he wrote a piece for The Graphic titled "With French to Kimberley and Roberts to Bloemfontein" which appeared in The Graphic History of the South African War. Giles contributed greatly to the pictorial record of the Boer War with works on display in museums in both South Africa and England. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal on 12 February 1903.Giles died at the age of 83 in Edinburgh on 1 February 1941.
Godfrey Douglas Giles's artworks have sold in many auctions worldwide, with sold prices fetching up to 51,750 USD, the current record price for this artist is for the painting title A BEDFORD COTTAGE TRIAL, which was sold at The Sporting Art Auction in 2019. You can find examples of his works like from the British Museum, Christie’s Mutualart, Suffolk Artists, National Army Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
