A Japanese letterbox from the Meiji period.
Black lacquer exterior with a hairline carved pattern of a samurai standing on a pavilion surrounded by a traditional landscape. The interior is finished with Nashij-i, a painstaking process involving layers of lacquer and gold. Fubako were used to keep letters and important papers in the Edo and Meiji periods.
