An intriguing example of sculptural stoneware, this distinctive covered vessel combines traditional East Asian ceramic influences with a wonderfully architectural, almost modernist sensibility.
The rounded body rests on four raised feet and is flanked by dramatically pierced, openwork handles. A beautifully fitted, saddle-shaped ceramic stopper crowns the vessel, echoing the angular geometry of its construction. The earthy olive-brown glaze, with its subtle variations in tone and texture, enhances the organic character of the piece.
A circular applied medallion on the front bears an intriguing stylized character, possibly the Japanese kanji 光, meaning "light" or "radiance." Its precise interpretation remains unconfirmed.
Possibly Japanese in origin, the vessel may have been intended for rice wine or another traditional use, although its unusual form makes it equally compelling as a purely decorative object.
An exceptional conversation piece, equally at home among a collection of Asian ceramics or displayed as a standalone work of sculptural pottery.
Maker unidentified. Origin and date unconfirmed.
