Jean Dubuffet (Le Havre, July 31, 1901 - Paris, May 12, 1985) was a French painter and sculptor. He is considered the founder of the Art Brut artistic movement. Dubuffet's real and most heartfelt artistic journey began in 1945, when he theorized and introduced the concept of Art Brut, works that are spontaneous, immediate, produced by people without specific artistic training, such as the mentally ill, children. In 1947, together with André Breton, Paulhan and Drouin, he founded the "Compagnie de l'art brut": the term defines the creative activity of "artists in spite of themselves", who create without aesthetic intentions, out of a personal emotional impulse converging into a immediate and concise communication. At the same time he organizes an exhibition displaying the drawings of children and mentally insane. He organizes his first American solo show which will take place in New York, at the Pierre Matisse Gallery. from the very beginning of his artistic adventure, Jean Dubuffet claims anti-cultural positions, since according to him culture impoverishes, suffocates, levels, generates darkness and, to put it another way, is asphyxiating. His goal is to free himself from the artistic tradition, to go in search of original artistic forces and to trace a new path for art. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
