Walter Whitcomb Thompson (1882 -1948) snowy landscape with barn scene oil painting. Signed at lower right. In off white tone frame with gilt trim, measures 14.5" x 16.5", painting measures 7.75" x 10".
Walter Whitcomb Thompson, a native of South Carolina, studied art at the University of Florida. He exhibited at the Telfair Academy and became director of the Beaufort, South Carolina art colony. He was a member of the Association of Georgia Artists and the Savannah Art Club.
Thompson continues the long tradition of American landscape painting that began in the early nineteenth century with the painters of the Hudson River School and their large expansive paintings of the wilderness. In the mid-to late-nineteenth century, artists like George Inness incorporated the approach of the French Barbizon School. Landscape was still the favored subject, but now the focus was on the expressive use of oil paints, not only to record an image, but also to evoke a mood. In the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, painters such as Inness carried Barbizon a step further, preferring poetry over factual representation. This stylistic trend is often called Tonalism.

Orders where Free Local Pickup or Seller Managed Local Delivery were selected:
- Upon inspection, If you decide not to move forward with the purchase, you or your agent must refuse the item at the time of pickup/delivery from the seller
- Once you have taken possession of the item, all sales are final
- International, cross-border returns may require different processes depending on the countries between which the item is shipping to/from, and the buyer is responsible and duties (if applicable, on cross-border orders).
- On approved returns, the buyer is responsible for the full cost of return packing and shipping.
Cancellations
- Prior to shipping or local pickup, buyers may cancel an order for any reason, with the exception of some Made-to-Order items, where supplies have been purchased or work begun on the item.

- Chairish Freight Delivery
- Delivered in a crate, to your front door.

- Chairish Freight deliveries can take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks.
