Gotthard Graubner was born on June 13, 1930 in Erlbach in the Vogtland. from 1947-48 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, then until 1952 at the Art Academy in Dresden. After moving to the West, Graubner continued his art studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1954. In the years 1955-57 Graubner's pictorial language breaks away from the geometric color forms he had used until then. First in watercolors, then also on canvas, he tried out forms of color application that give the multiply applied color priority over its limitation in forms and picture edges. In order to intensify the spatial effect of the color surfaces, Graubner shifted in the early 1960s to mounting picture-sized color cushions in the picture itself and later covering them with a perlon fabric. These so-called "pillow pictures" were first exhibited by the Düsseldorf gallery owner Alfred Schmela. After working as an art teacher for a year, Graubner received a teaching position at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg in 1965, where he became a professor of painting in 1969. In 1968 Graubner exhibited for the first time at the documenta in Kassel. Between 1968 and 1972 he created the so-called "Nebelräume". In 1970 Graubner replaces the older work designations "Farbleib" or "Kissenbild" with "Farbraumkörper". When he represented the FRG at the 1971 Biennale in Sao Paulo, he took the opportunity to travel on to Colombia, Peru and Mexico. Further study trips to India and Nepal followed. In 1973 Graubner became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, and in 1976 he was appointed professor of free painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. An unforgettable exhibition of his work took place in 1980 at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden. In 1982 Graubner can be seen in the German pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale with a five-part color space body ensemble. In 1987 the artist was awarded the August Macke Prize of the city of Meschede, and in 1988 the North German Art Prize. In the same year Graubner creates two large paintings for the official residence of the Federal President in Berlin, Bellevue Palace. In 2001/02 the works of the Otto Ritschl Prize winner are exhibited in the Museum Wiesbaden. In his 'uvre, Graubner seems to be unaffected by developments in contemporary art. Rather, he has consistently followed the path once taken: To develop the independent life of color - freed from the claim to have to represent something other than itself - is the great theme of Gotthard Graubner's art.
