This exquisite Jiangsu crafted screen dates to the late 19th-century and is composed of four hinged panels, each made of elder wood. Intended for domestic use, this relatively low- level screen was traditionally used as a "modesty board" to conceal ankles and lower garments within a ladies' chamber. This piece features floral carvings of vases surrounded by bouquets on the main panels, an iconic motif associated with femininity. The bottom panels are relief carved again with various types of flowers.
This intricately-scrolled four-panel screen with flower vase carvings demonstrate an impressive level of skill, likely crafted for a wealthy household. Its modern-day use may include sectioning off part of a room or as a decorative dressing screen in a bedroom.
Dimensions shown are for each of the four panels.
