A very scarce and desirable French Barbotine majolica jug or pitcher, the Orchies factory, circa rchies started producing majolica at the end of the 19th century and by the early 1900’s produced over twenty molds of humorous majolica jugs featuring animals. This is a terrific piece!
This mold shows a dog climbing his way out of a staved barrel. The base is ringed with tall grasses in varying shades of green. The front end of the dog forms the spout, his fore paws hang over the barrel rim, his mouth is the opening. The dog’s shaggy tail makes the handle. A glazed deep red interior.
Book reference: Majolica Figures – Cunningham, pg. 114
7.5″ handle to spout or in this case, nose to tail. 10″H with a base diameter of 4″
