A gorgeous set of twelve sterling silver butter or patè spreaders, in the ‘Versailles’ pattern from the Gorham Manufacturing Co. Providence Rhode Island, circa 1888.
Designed by Antone Heller, and named for the palace of Versailles, the residence of King Louis XIV of France. Described as: “Scenes from the daily life at Versailles, which formed the most brilliant period of French social life.”
The spreaders show a full bodied putto or cupid figure on the terminal amid an ornate pattern of scrolled acanthus leaves and beading. The speeder has a flat, shaped blade. Each blade is engraved with the entwined initials EGE.
The Versailles pattern is discontinued.
Marked: the three sterling trademarks used by Gorham, Sterling, Copyrighted.
4.5 in. L x 1 in. W x .25 in. H Weight: 5.808 Troy Ounces … total.
