René Thomsen was a French painter of the École de Paris, born in Paris on July 21, 1897, and died in Versailles on July 28, 1976.
René Thomsen was the son of a sculptor and friend of Dr. Paul Gachet, Vincent van Gogh's patron. His divorced mother, who became Henri Barbusse's secretary and later Cécile Sorel's, introduced him to Théophile Steinlen. He was a pupil of Louis Anquetin; a biographical note published in 1932 at an École de Paris exhibition in Dallas, Texas, also lists him as a pupil of Fernand Cormon at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts.
René Thomsen was mobilized during the First World War in 1917, and never stopped drawing and painting Scenes of Soldiers. For a long time, a set of these drawings formed part of the collection of painter and sculptor Fernand Belmonte, who donated them to the Méry-sur-Marne town hall, where they remain today. Another of Thomsen's themes from the same period is that of the Filles de joie. In 1919, a time of great material precariousness when he knew Maurice Loutreuil, Manuel Ortiz de Zarate, Jules Pascin and Amedeo Modigliani, he discovered the Académie Colarossi with Chaïm Soutine and Isaac Dobrinsky.
