Carlos Catasse who was widely celebrated during his lifetime in South America and Europe, painted vibrant and colorful depictions of nature. Catasse’s compositions, approached through a kaleidoscope of different traditions, reveal a range of artistic influences and experiments in style. In his paintings of trees, for example, Catasse employed an array of colors and solid, two-dimensional forms that resemble stained glass. In contrast, the artist’s slightly more conventional landscapes, such as Bahia Nortena (2005), are firmly rooted in representational painting—though in their soft, at times expressive, use of line, light, and color, they refuse to conform to tradition.
