Accordingly to Chinese tradition, butterflies are an auspicious sign. They convey a wish for longevity, and were therefore often used to decorate birthday gifts or lanterns given during the Autumn Moon Festival: on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar (usually around September).

Encircling the entire rim of the plate is a dense depiction of butterflies and insects with medallions of roses repeating clusters highlighted by metallic gold gilt. Intricate hand detailing in gold is also reflected in each individual butterfly against a range of different gradated color schemes per every set of wings, creating a visual feast for the eyes.

The border along the plate's divot has a copper toned trim enclosing a pattern of floral pastels done in the same style as the garden themed centerpiece. The large pink flowers dominating the center are uniquely enameled in a satin finish and realistic style in contrast to the rest of the plate's design, which is entirely encased in glossy glaze front and back.

The colors are sumptuous and saturated and the design meticulously hand painted. Please expand the photos for the best clarity and detail.

It is in good condition for its age with two minor rim chips as shown. There is some gilt loss of enamel around the divot rim, typical age and use
