From a group of studies of Old Master drawings by the same hand and removed from that artist's portfolio many years ago. A few are signed "Walcott" and dated 1830. Based on the fact they are all laid down to similar mounts, we will consider Walcott to have drawn all these around 1830.
This portrait is possibly a portrait of Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) and bears a similarity to a woodcut of him by Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515–1586) found in the Met in New York. This drawing is ink on paper laid down to a mount with tool lines.
