He used charred wood bundles placing them horizontally onto a black painted wood background in a shadow box-style frame. The charred wood is raw and unfinished and the pieces vary in size extruding from the sides of this sculpture.
See accompanying image of the back where he signed and dated it 1966. Very good abstract work of art; Mr Bertschinger is still working on his art today.

Hafis & Mara directed by Mano Khalil tells the story of the later years of a diverse artistic couple; the Swiss-Lebanese artist Hafis Bertschinger and his wife and patron, Mara. Hafis is a tireless traveller, crossing borders between different worlds and cultures, who still in his senior years passionately creates art. He loves experimenting and being challenged in his art, in relationships and in everyday life. However his unconditional dedication to art and his impulsive character have also caused a lot of pain.
