During the mid-1970's, New York was on the verge of bankruptcy. Banks refused to lend New York the money and President Gerald Ford refused federal aid. Municipal Assistance Corporation, also known as "MAC" was an independent New York corporation created by the State of New York that sold almost $10 billion in bonds to keep the city solvent.
