We are selling this great American 19th century needlework sampler. This sampler has alphabets and is signed Cornelia Cowles. Aged 10 Years Aug 26th and dated 1844. We believe the sampler was done By Cornelia Ann Cowles French (1834-1903), we're not sure if the Sampler was done in Illinois or California. Cowles had a very interesting history and was born in Illinois and eventually married Darwin French. She had family history in New York, Connecticut, Illinois and San Diego California. Erasmus Darwin French (Jan 20th, 1822 – Sep 1902) was born in Yates County, New York. He enlisted in the army, one record I came across stated he served in Co. C, 1st U.S. Dragoons. On Dec 6th, 1846, he was at the Battle of San Pasqual (near present day San Diego). He wrote a poem about the event (included in this story). Following his military service (in the Mexican American War), one report placed French in the area of Grapevine Canyon (present day Kern County), cattle ranching. Jan 1850, French was part of the rescue effort that saved the Bennett-Arcane party, the Lost '49ers; from whom the name Death Valley is believed to have originated. Autumn 1850, the French expedition discovered gold (although some reports state silver) deposits in the Coso Range between Little Lake and what is now Darwin. Darwin French lived in San Jose where on Jan 12th, 1858, he married Cornelia Ann Cowles (1804 – 1903, she was born in Illinois); daughter of Judge Alfred Cowles and his wife, Charlotte Cowles Cowles of San Diego. Darwin and Cornelia had twin daughters and two sons: Lila and Lula Charlotte French (C. Nov 1863 – 1864, born and died in San Jose); Alfred Channing French (Sep 7th, 1867 – July 28th, 1959, born in San Jose); and Addison Edward French (Feb 14th, 1871 – Jan 8th, 1949, born in San Diego). Both sons died in Globe, Gila County, Arizona. C. 1862, French, with several others including Dennis Searles (brother of John Searles, of Searles Valley and borax fame) made a foray into the badlands. This time French found silver, but it was miles away in the Cosos; the Searles' found borax. Darwin, Darwin Wash, Darwin Bench and Darwin Falls were named in honor of Erasmus Darwin French.
