This intricately-crafted panel is from Anhui (circa 1850) and originally adorned a large Chinese marriage bed. Constructed from a mix of woods - including pine and beech - the panel is detailed with carvings of mythical beasts and symbols signifying wealth and prestige, such as vases, bronzes, and more.
The top contains a 'kylin', a mythical dragon-like creature signifying good fortune and prosperity. Both side sections feature an upside-down bat, a universal symbol of good luck, plus small, beaded carvings adorned with circular symbols for long life and prosperity. Additionally, the bases of each side section are shaped into scrolls, displaying delicate carvings of bronzes and vases of flowers. The design is completed by open carvings of scrolling florals.
The carved sections feature traces of color, with varying reds, blacks, and browns, indicating that the bed may have originally had a vibrant finish. Now, its toned-down, neutral hues would blend seamlessly into any interior. Use the panel as a headboard, an eye-catching backdrop for a flat-screen television, or simply as a striking architectural piece for wall decor.
