Lovely and intimate still life by listed artist Irving Block (1910 - 1986), painted in 1973. A sweet depiction of strawberry fruit in the familiar green plastic basket, in a subdued palette of pink, green and light blue. Pencil signed and dated at lower right (LXXIII = '73). Beautiful original wood frame with silk liner. Measures 15.5 x 15 inches framed (8.75 x 8.25 image window opening). Wire hanger on reverse. Ready to hang and enjoy. (Horizontal lines in photos are camera reflections, and moire pattern is a result of photographing silk; these marks are not present in the work.)
About the artist:
Irving Block (1910 - 1986) was a painter and educator in Los Angeles. He was involved in the WPA Federal Art Project in the 1930s, and worked as an artist at 20th Century Fox in the 1940s and 50s. He was a faculty member in the Art Department at California State University, Northridge from 1963 - 1980.
Provenance:
From the estate of Naomi Caryl Hirshhorn (1931 - 2022). Estate stamp on reverse. Both Naomi Caryl and Irving Block were associated with the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles. Caryl was a longtime art collector in Los Angeles and owned many works by Block. Caryl was the daughter of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, whose art collection established the Hirshhorn Museum as a part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
