It comes in a removable copper lining and the wooden cotainer is made by Mage Wappa technique. Mage Wappa, Bent-woodware is a traditional Japanese steam bending wood craft.

A beautiful example of Japanese lacquer (urushi), this elegant hibachi pair makes an ideal jardinière for orchids, lush greenery or seasonal flowers.

Remnants of ash on the interior add to its charm.
Meiji Period (1868 – 1912).
Original finish and condition.

Originally used as a hand warmer, there are multiple contemporary uses for this piece such for use as a planter or for display.

* Designed to hold glowing embers, hibachi vessels were used for cooking or as a source of heat in Japanese homes. Placed under a low wood kotatsu table with an open slat top, the hibachi functioned as a grill and created a cozy gathering place for the family.

** Shunkei Nuri is one of Japanese traditional lacquer technique from Hida area, Gifu pref in Japan. It is supposedly developed by a 14th-century monk named Shunkei and was a popular method in the 17th century of using clear lacquer to allow the natural appearance of the wood underneath to show through.
