During his apprenticeship as a decorative painter, Willi Baumeister initially attended evening classes at the Art Academy in Stuttgart. from 1909-1912 he belonged to Adolf Hölzel's composition class and had first contacts with the later Bauhaus painter Oskar Schlemmer, with whom he would have a lifelong friendship. In 1919/20 he created the first "Wall Pictures," picture panels that were given a wall-like relief through the addition of sand and putty and designed with cubist forms. These pictures brought Baumeister his international artistic breakthrough. In 1928 the Frankfurt Städelschule appointed the artist as head of the class for commercial graphics, typography and fabric printing. In 1930 Baumeister joined the "Cercle Carré" and in 1931 he became a member of the artists' group "Abstraction-Création". Ostracized as "degenerate" in the Third Reich, Baumeister could hardly appear in public as an artist. He therefore devoted himself to prehistoric and oriental studies, which formed the essential motif fund of his "Eidos" pictures and "Ideograms". During the war Baumeister wrote the book "The Unknown in Art," which first appeared in 1947. In the postwar era he resumed his teaching activities at the art academy in Stuttgart. Baumeister's comprehensive oeuvre and his fundamental writings on art theory make him one of the most important German artists of the modern era. His oeuvre, which is divided into many groups of works, was initially still based on the figurative, but showed an increasingly abstract development. This piece has an attribution mark,
