What is the difference between a concave and convex mirror?
A concave mirror is a mirror that curves inward a bit, like a shallow spoon, while a convex mirror is a mirror that bulges slightly outward like an eye. A concave mirror is heralded for making reflections appear larger than they actually are, while a convex mirror makes objects appear smaller than they actually are. Its ability to make reflections appear larger is what makes a concave mirror the preferred choice for most interiors. Most larger mirrors you find on the market, intended for use in a bedroom or bathroom, will be a concave mirror. Convex mirrors tend to be less practical due to their optics and therefore are primarily designed to be smaller and more decorative than functional. Convex mirrors, which are also known as fish eye mirrors, tend to have ornate frames and a fairly small mirror portion. Common convex mirror styles include Federal mirrors and sunburst mirrors.
