What is a baulster?

A baulster, which can also be referred to as a spindle, is essentially a shapely post that is used to support a railing or other architectural feature. Typically, balusters are very shapely pieces showcasing a curvy silhouette that could be likened to vase. Balusters are rarely used solo, but rather are usually used in a series, spaced equally apart within a rail to provide support to the upper railing. A group of balusters used together like this is known as a balustrade. Balusters can be made out of any material, but generally, they are constructed of something solid and capable of supporting a large amount of weight such as wood, iron, or stone. While balusters are usually integrated into grand outdoor stairways, balconies, and other exterior building features, spindles are essentially the same concept as the baulster, proportioned down to suit interior features like interior staircases and furniture.
