Whether you’re shopping for a dresser to complete a bedroom, or you’re looking for one to sub as a credenza in a living room, a dresser is always an inspired idea. Of course, not all dressers are created equal. A dresser that functions perfectly well in a bedroom might not be suitable for use as a buffet in a dining room. There’s also the question of style. Thanks to their simple form, new and antique dresser designs are available in a wide range of styles, including French Empire to Art Deco to Mid-Century Modern and beyond. All these options can make it difficult to pick the right dresser for your needs. If you’re in the midst of a dresser debate, here are three things to take into consideration.

Drawer Configuration

Drawers are the soul of every dresser. The most standard drawer configuration is the six-drawer dresser. Consisting of three rows of drawers stacked two across, the six-drawer dresser has a rectangular shape that makes it the perfect stand-in for credenzas, consoles, and buffets. Another common arrangement in the three-drawer dresser. Three drawer dressers generally consist of three drawers stacked vertically. A more narrow profile makes these dressers ideal for bedrooms with limited space, as well as hallways and entries.

Size

Consider what contents you want to store in your dresser to help decide what size dresser is best for you. Keep in mind that this isn’t the time for sweeping generalizations. If your objective is to store clothes in your dresser, take stock of exactly what clothes you plan to stow. Winter sweaters, for instance, will take up far more space than swimwear. It’s also wise to measure the space where you intend to place your dresser when deciding on a dresser size.

Material

Long gone are the days when wood dressers comprised the lion’s share of the dresser market. Today, you can find dressers crafted of brass and laminate, as well as wood dressers covered in luxurious materials like grasscloth, or even fabric. Consider where your dresser will be stationed before deciding on a material. For instance, dressers in public spaces like dining rooms will be at guests’ disposal. This can generate a lot more wear and tear. In instances like these, opt for more durable surfaces like wood. In a bedroom, usage is usually more minimal. For bedroom dressers, feel empowered to spring for more precious materials like fabric, or easily-scratched laminate.
