Credenzas are making a comeback! And they’re not just for holding up your TV anymore. Not only are they great for storage, but it’s a stylish way to add personality to any room. That means what’s placed on top of your credenza is almost as important as the credenza itself. While finding and arranging the perfect mix of decor may seem stressful at first, have no fear. Here are four easy ways to perfectly style your vintage credenza.

It’s All About Proportions

Remember the rule of thirds from your high school photography class? Well, it also applies to interior design. When it comes to decor, the rule of three is based on the idea that objects or details arranged in odd numbers is more aesthetically pleasing. Having an odd number of decor items creates visual interest and movement. Playing with proportions will also keep your credenza looking fresh and fun, not boring or tired. We like the idea of using oversized decor items atop a smaller credenza to keep things interesting for the eye. While saying that, we also recommend that things stay balanced. Mix up small and large items, play with heavier and lighter pieces, and experiment with spacing to achieve the perfect proportional look.

 Show Off Your Art

A credenza is also a fabulous way to display your art. Whether it’s one statement piece or many smaller pieces, a credenza can be curated just like a gallery wall. You can either draw the eye to the art by hanging it and placing the credenza underneath, or arrange framed artwork on top of the credenza itself. You want to keep art the focus of the space and add in complementary objects. Choosing colorful artwork will brighten up the credenza and keep the room looking fresh. Make sure to stay consistent with the color palette and use items from the same era as the artwork to ensure everything comes together perfectly.

Learn to Layer

Another way to make your credenza look stylish is mastering the art of layering. Layering objects adds depth and intrigue to a vignette, as well as allowing you to include more objects. When layering, the critical rules are fairly straightforward: larger items in the back and stagger so that everything is seen. After that, the design world is your oyster! Don’t be afraid to get creative by draping items over edges or using live objects such as succulents or spider plants, or grouping items by color.

Keep It Colorful

Color might be the most important feature in any design project, especially when styling a credenza. Items placed on a credenza should look like they’re following a similar theme. The easiest way to achieve this is through the use of color. Establishing and maintaining a palette that works with the original colors in the room will pull everything together and keep the look polished. For a more whimsical vibe, we love the idea of a rainbow of assorted objects. If a room is all-white or neutral to begin with, use the credenza as a chance to add a splash of color by painting it!
